Mental Health Awareness in Construction

Suicide Prevention in Construction Training

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and MSTI is committed to supporting the mental health and safety of our workforce. Join us for a vital training session on Thursday, September 11, from 2–4 pm at the Brazosport Training Center.

This course, presented in partnership with VitalCog, focuses on suicide prevention in the workplace with a special emphasis on the construction industry—an industry that faces higher-than-average risks. For just $20 per person, participants will gain tools to recognize warning signs, start conversations, and connect struggling team members to support. This training is especially valuable for safety leaders, foremen, general foremen, and anyone in a leadership role. Together, we can help ensure no one feels alone.

At ABC Texas Gulf Coast, we believe that safety on the jobsite goes beyond hard hats and harnesses—it includes mental health, too. Construction is one of the most physically and mentally demanding industries, and it’s time we bring mental well-being to the forefront of workplace safety conversations.

The Hidden Crisis in Construction

The construction industry consistently ranks among the highest for suicide rates in the United States. Long hours, physically taxing labor, job insecurity, and a “tough it out” culture all contribute to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression among workers. Often, these challenges go unspoken and untreated—leading to preventable tragedies.

That’s why ABC Texas Gulf Coast is committed to promoting mental health awareness, providing resources for education and support, and encouraging open conversations throughout our contractor and workforce community.

Building a Culture of Care

Creating a supportive environment starts with education and leadership. Through partnerships, training, and awareness campaigns, ABC Texas Gulf Coast is helping members:

  • Recognize signs of stress, burnout, and mental health struggles
  • Know how to respond appropriately and provide support
