ABC Texas Gulf Coast Chapter held its first Texas Hold ‘Em tournament on October 30th at Jackson Oaks Golf Club.

Lathan Watts, ABC Region 3 Political Manager, opened the evening with comments on the importance of the election and other races in 2008. “Basically next year's election is the most important one in the history of ABC. Big labor will spend 100-200 million dollars to elect congressman, senators and a president that will pass their agenda. Card Check will return, the Respect Act will come up, the MOATB (mother of all tax bills) will raise taxes on all individuals, companies large and small, investments, and estates. European socialist style health care will be a top priority as well. We can not afford to sit on the sidelines and hope the good guys win. We must do everything in our power to make it happen. Get into politics or get out of business.”

The tournament began with six tables of friendly and eager poker players. The dealers were great fun and helped keep the pace of play moving. After the first hour of play and re-buys, players were eliminated and the competition narrowed. Remaining players were repositioned and ultimately the final table was formed. ABC members and guest watched as the skillful players strategized, bluffed and hoped for a little luck to try and be the champion. Buck Blevins held tight and defeated his tough competition to win the event. Second place went to Bennett Ghormley, and third place to Jack Murphy.
