Jan Hargrave, noted author, lecturer, and teacher entertained and enlightened the ABC Membership on April 28th with insights into the many messages we send non-verbally! According to Ms. Hargrave and research, 55% of our communication is done without the use of words – that means your hands, your eyes, even your legs and feet are sending messages to others. Those with a little knowledge in this field might just be able to tell whether you are telling the truth or lying, so beware what you do with those body parts!
She informed the group that about 38% of the messages we send come from voice inflection and only 7% actually comes from the words we say. The way you tilt your head, cross your arms or legs, or even raise your hand can give those in the know a sense of what you ‘really’ mean.
We learned that the right side of our body is controlled by the analytical, left side of our brain, so most of the movement from that side is probably truthful. On the other hand, movements from the left side of the body, the side controlled by our daydreaming, comical right brain may often not be as sincere. So the person that rubs his nose with his left hand and also covers his mouth and looks down may not mean exactly what his words are saying. Likewise, pulling at the left ear while listening to your story or commenting on what you have said might be an indication that he doesn’t believe you even if he says he does.
The group also learned about gestures that indicate sincerity and truthfulness – palms up, firm handshakes where no one’s hand is on top is a form of control. The open hand to the heart on the chest is also a number one sign of sincerity.
Our thanks (palms up, of course) to Ms. Hargrave and the Programs Committee who brought this delightful presentation to the event.
